The Violence of Mexican Drug Cartels

I’m not sure if asking the US to take responsibility for its role in the funding and arming of Mexican drug production and consequent violence is going to do any good – perpetuating the “War on Drugs” is, after all, one their main concerns. Besides, there a lot of money to be made, even if from time to time high-profile money launders do get rumbled.

  1. I grew up in Arizona and My Best-friend/ex-girlfriend and her Family were basically forced to leave Mexico. her father was a police Officer in Mexicali, this was in the early 1980′s and had arrested the “Wrong” people who had a Van full of Drugs. He was informed by his superiors of who and who not to arrest, He later received a check for quite a large sum for” His wife and daughters” from an anonymous donor/ good Samaritan..I guess you’d say Hush money and warning. That was when they decided to basically leave Mexico. Being that this was Mexicali, a border town, he had contact with both U.S. and Mexican Authorities who were not at all opposed to looking the other way when a supplementary fund was applied. I think the problem now is that both the US and Mexican governments are pissed because of the decades of this activity has made the cartels basically independent, they no longer have to pay the hush money and can operate without bounds, On the one hand, the economic reality is that cartels keep people employed on both sides of the fence. on the other, you have a syndicate that makes Capone’s and all the old bootleggers look like 2 bit chumps…There’s no real clear answer in this one…

    • Indeed – aside from perhaps legalizing cocaine and methamphetamine and setting up “legit” production labs on US soil to undermine the cartels, but I can see any number of problems stemming from that option (not least why on earth would you want to legitimize something like coke and meth??)…

      • I agree, Marijuana, is kind of a given, from it’s obvious medicinal, agricultural, industrial uses, But apart from the already specific uses medically of Coke And Meth, as drugs of recreation, yeah, that’s a big stretch for me as well, Harm reduction, medical treatment vs. criminalization.. I don’t know… Were on a weird crackdown right now over Prescription Opioids; Our current drug paranoia, I wonder if this has anything to do with the Afghan occupation? we’ve also been experiencing interesting rounds of Drug Shortages, where the DEA refuses to release to manufacturers certain compounds… strange
