Gangster No. 1

What better way to spend your Saturday night than watching Paul McGuigan’s excellent film about a young villain on the rise. We begin with “gangster” aged 55, played by Malcolm McDowell, as he watches a boxing match, then head back to his younger self (Paul Bettany) as he climbs the ladder of the criminal underworld in late 60s London. It’s notable for its unflinching, often enervating violence, sparkling dialogue and Bettany’s intense performance, which rightly brought him much wider recognition.
