An Interpretation of Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut

Here’s the first in a series of fascinating articles I’ll be sharing on the great director Stanley Kubrick – first up, The Konformist analyses Eyes Wide Shut and discusses the esoteric symbolism and connection to the MK Ultra mind control program:

In Stanley Kubrick‘s final film, Eyes Wide Shut, are numerous veiled allusions to the CIA’s MK-ULTRA mind control experiments and Monarch sex slave programming, subjects which readers of The Konformist should be well familiar. According to believed victims of Monarch abuse, their ranks number literally in thousands, and it has been alleged that these very same victims have been used extensively as sex slaves, drug mules and assassins. According to varied sources, Monarch programming begins immediately at birth, and is carried out through the lives of its victims, as they are used by intelligence agencies and secret societies like mere pawns on a gameboard, until–in many instances–they have outlived their usefulness, and are terminally “discarded”.

Blue Remembered Hills

A group of seven year olds played by adult actors might sound like a bit of a gimmick, but Dennis Potter’s excellent screenplay – a wry commentary on brutality – and brilliant performances from the likes of Michael Elphick, Helen Mirren and John Bird elevate this into something of a minor masterpiece.

Jingo All the Way

Propaganda in Hollywood blockbusters isn’t the most sophisticated beast. The adulation of the military; extolling the virtues of “might makes right” while breaking the rules to “get the job done”; the simplistic deliniation of good guys (the Americans, of course) and bad guys (whichever target the Empire has its sights on at the time, and whose people it wishes to dehumanize) – these tropes are as instantly recognizable as the stars on the screen.

One of Hollywood’s great directors who could be said to have defined what it was to be American more than any other film maker, John Ford, became a top advisor to the Office of Strategic Services (OSS, forerunner to the CIA) following World War 2. 50 years later and the relationship between Hollywood and the American military and intelligence establishment has become closer and more blatant than ever, with their direct involvement in movies like Zero Dark Thirty about as subtle as a Die Hard explosion.

This year’s summer blockbusters are proving to be no exception – Olympus Has Fallen ranks as one of the most egregious examples of Hollywood propaganda lighting up the big screen.

Everything Is A Remix – Remixed

An excellent short documentary on copying and the derivative nature of the creative process.

Steven Spielberg and George Lucas warn of movie industry ‘implosion’ and $50 tickets: Is this the end of Hollywood as we know it?

Would the death of Hollywood be such a bad thing? If it ushered in a new era of more meaningful cinema perhaps not. I enjoy popcorn entertainment as much as anyone else but the standard has been slipping year after year – the trouble with large budget movies is that the execs always play it safe, consequently producing derivative products with little originality. Smaller budget, lower risk projects and high quality TV series might be the way to go.

Via The Independent:

It will come as little comfort to young filmmakers that even Steven Spielberg has difficulty getting a movie financed.

Speaking to film students this week, Spielberg warned of an imminent “implosion” in the industry, saying several successive blockbuster box-office flops would radically alter the Hollywood business model. In future, the director suggested, audiences will be expected to pay more to see large-scale films than their more understated counterparts.

‘Contagion’ or How Disaster Movies “Educate” the Masses

I wrote a review of Contagion outlining the ties to various alpabet agencies – Hollywood’s ties to the American establishment aren’t limited to the Pentagon…

Via Vigilant Citizen:

Hollywood movies are usually presented as a form of entertainment, but their plots often conceal a specific agenda. “Disaster movies”, films about the end of the world through various mass crises, are particularly interesting as they all follow the same basic formula and glorify the same entities. In this article, we’ll look at the disaster movie ‘Contagion’ and how it “teaches” its viewers who to trust and who not to trust during a crisis.
